I was eager to buy this book the minute I saw it online. I’m more of a fiction reader usually, however, every now and then I love to get my hands on a book that’s full of personal accounts and talks about real life issues.
After a few weeks of reading this book on and off, I have to say it is the most inspiring book I’ve ever read.
I study History and English Literature so the longstanding issue of feminism and women fighting for equality has always found its way into my studies. Yet, I was never truly aware of what it meant to be a feminist and I never really voiced my own feelings in fear of me saying the wrong thing or not representing the ‘true’ qualities of a feminist. However, this book has really reassured me when it comes to the topic of feminism. It has taught me that there is no strict guidelines when it comes to feminism, it’s more about your OWN feminism and how YOU interpret things.

Just to put it out there, it may seem that this book is a women only book and it is only speaking from a woman’s point of view – but in my eyes, it’s a book for everyone. It teaches so many invaluable life lessons that we all need to know in order to beat gender inequality to the ground. The reason I believe it’s a book for everyone derives from reading Jameela Jamil’s input in the book; she discusses how we must teach young boy’s of the importance of women in society and to respect women. I totally agree with Jameela because when we’re young, we’re naive and vulnerable to what society pushes onto us. If someone’s father is rude, disrespectful or dismissive of his wife, then a young boy is going to watch this and believe this is how men should treat women. Vice versa with women disrespecting men. Jameela’s argument of teaching younger people to respect women – and to consider them as equals – secures the success of feminism reaching its goal of gender equality one day in the future.
(I won’t say much more as I don’t want to give too much away of the rest of the book!!)
You can read this book in whole, or you can use it as little snippets to give yourself some inspiration from time to time. It’s the ideal book to pick up when you need a moment to reflect on life and to put hope back into your own feminism.
It’s a brilliant read and well worth your time.
Happy reading!
