Book Haul – June 2018

I recently made a trip to Waterstones in Cardiff to stock up my shelves ready for a summer of reading. I was a little stumped as to what books to spend the first half of summer reading, but an hour later I eventually left the store a happy girl, with 3 brand new books.

Jojo Moyes – The Last Letter from your Lover

I’m weirdly drawn to books that give off the impression it will cause a few tears (I’m sure some of you feel the same). It was the cover of this book that first made me pick it up on the shelf. It has a mystic and fairytale vibe to it, with the illustration of the trees and a singular woman. It made me wonder whether the woman is the sole character who merely receives letters from an anonymous person, or if it depicts the end of the novel and when she ends up alone. After reading the blurb, I loved the idea of one person having related issues with another character. Ellie is a journalist and wants to find something interesting to write about. She can’t find anything until she comes across a 1960s letter written by a man asking a woman to leave her husband. We are then introduced to Jennifer, who is recovering from a car accident and is going through the overwhelming experience of regaining her memory. I really do enjoy the kind of stories where you experience more than one character’s perspective, and for this, I’m really looking forward to reading this Jojo Moyes novel.

Philip K. Dick – The Man in the High Castle

Truly, I’ve never been a science fiction reader, but I found an annual reading list idea on Pinterest (the nation’s guilty passion) and the reading list mentioned reading a genre that you don’t think you’ll like. I dismissed it at first, but then I thought about it more and I felt up to the challenge. This book explores the idea of an alternate world where the Nazis won the war and united with Japan to rule major areas of the globe. I’ve never heard of a book similar to this and the storyline jumped out at me as being very unique. Of course, there is now a popular Amazon TV series of the book. However, we can all agree TV adaptations never quite live up to the book. I’m captivated by the historical fiction and the alternative thinking of this book and I’m really looking forward to reading it.

Virginia Woolf – A Room of One’s Own

I’ll be honest, I’ve never read any of Virginia Woolf’s works and I’m an English Literature undergrad. But aside from all of the fiction, I really wanted to read something educational and empowering this summer. This book discusses how women need, both their own physical and mental space, to embrace their full intelligence and independence. It is also a small and thin book, so of course I decided it would be a quick read to start right away. Its small size also means it can fit perfectly in my handbag and I can read it any time, anywhere. I’m really excited to read this and share my thoughts with you on my first ever Virginia Woolf book.

So there we have it…

This is my first Book Haul and I’ve really loved telling you guys why I chose my new books. I love a Book Haul because they inspire you to find new books, and you might just find your new favourite. Keep your eyes pealed for the reviews of these books too!
